Directions in Immersive Communication

Přednášející: Philip A. Chou (Microsoft Research, Redmond, WA, USA), Autoři: Philip A. Chou (Microsoft Research, Redmond, WA, USA)

At ICASSP 2011, delegates from all over the world will converge on Prague to meet each other. From their transportation alone, they will collectively release on the order of a thousand tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. Why is this necessary? Humans are social animals and have evolved to interact best with each other face to face, in ways that our current communication systems cannot convey. However, technology evolves faster than biology. In the coming decade, it will be possible to transmit, process, and render more bits per second than the human sensory system can physically absorb. When that threshold is crossed, what do we want our communication systems to look like? Hollywood, the keeper of our collective dreams, has the answer: immersive. Movies from Star Trek and Star Wars to The Matrix and Avatar reflect man's dream of being able to be in one physical location while appearing to be in another. In this talk, I will take you on a tour of variol technologies as well as experiences that are being developed in Microsoft Research for immersive communication. Along the way will be evident many opportunities for advances in signal processing.
