0:00:02when the spill happened in april two thousand and
0:00:07we thought to be of a very interesting
0:00:09time to go in and not only ask with the standard questions we've been asking
0:00:12about environmental opinions
0:00:15but ask but the c and ask whether they were in fact changing as we
0:00:18watch
0:00:20so the first idea was to ask has this bill affected you and if so
0:00:24how but secondly to put that in context are have your views changed as a
0:00:29result of this in anyway
0:00:31it was very interesting we found the a strong pattern of difference between the two
0:00:36areas we study
0:00:38we did about a thousand telephone interviews in too close to purchase louisiana
0:00:42and about a thousand more in three counties of slopes for the panhandle
0:00:48both in areas where the will was actually washing ashore both fairly close to be
0:00:52bp horizon spills by
0:00:55on both very much affected economically though in somewhat different ways
0:01:00and we were
0:01:01controlling for a lot of individual factors we were struck by how different responses were
0:01:05from the louisiana purchase and the of florida counties or right across to write down
0:01:11the coast
0:01:13in general the louisiana resonance were much more likely to say they've been personally affected
0:01:18by this bill
0:01:20they were more likely to say their use of been change the result of this
0:01:24bill
0:01:25and also because we're asking some sort of bigger questions are there are more likely
0:01:29to mention that
0:01:31they had been personally were their community affected by extreme or unusual weather events
0:01:36and also that they felt that future looking at was written to a greater extent
0:01:40by rising sea levels do the climate change
0:01:43all of those for higher in louisiana
0:01:47but then we also ask questions like well would you support a moratorium on deep
0:01:53water drilling until new safety measures are implemented and i was much less popular in
0:01:59louisiana much more so one for you know they have been less affected by this
0:02:02bill by their own account
0:02:04similarly we asked a which you think is more or should are
0:02:08america be increasing the drilling an exploration for well or should we be developing alternative
0:02:16and renewable energy resources
0:02:18and are increased drilling was much more popular in louisiana and was in florida
0:02:23and the third question was sort of a catch all question which do you think
0:02:27is more important for the future we use resources now the create jobs or to
0:02:30conserve them for future generations
0:02:33and the floridians were more likely to seconds are they are
0:02:37louisiana respondents more often said use them now for jobs
0:02:41so with this paradox between the louisiana residency more effects of this bill and for
0:02:47that matter from extreme weather from rising sea level and single use of n change
0:02:52but the florida resonance
0:02:54being more supportive of such things as a deep water moratorium until new safety measures
0:02:59were implemented and the development of alternative energy rather than an increased drilling
0:03:05well it wasn't really what we expected but as we went back to the previous
0:03:08research other people are done well before this bill a it made more and more
0:03:12sense all the most obvious thing here are the economy's that the economy and in
0:03:18louisiana's extracting something like sixty billion dollars a year
0:03:22from oil the economy in florida something like sixty billion dollars here from tours
0:03:28so that both using the coast but in very different ways
0:03:31and so well this is bringing money into louisiana but well on the features would
0:03:36take money away from florida would it would harm their livelihood so one part of
0:03:41is the obvious economic difference but i think beyond that
0:03:44you have a lot of
0:03:47culture a lot of development
0:03:50a lot of history taking two different tracks to the whole twentieth century and how
0:03:56they use and development and relate to the coast
