0:00:07so what we're doing it this experiment is
0:00:10trying to figure out exactly
0:00:13why and how tree style even though everyone knows that droughts
0:00:17come along and vegetation dies
0:00:20nobody yet can predict where when
0:00:23how fast how well the idea is that these drought structures move about half of
0:00:30the water that false a little rain or snow false here
0:00:33it's all the way trains downhill
0:00:36so that this ecosystem receives about fifty percent
0:00:41the ambient rainfall this induces a drought stresses trees
0:00:46in addition we know that when there are droughts it usually really hot
0:00:50and we expect that to get much worse because all the evidence shows quite strongly
0:00:54that there's temperature is going on
0:00:56is and you never tree here
0:00:59in study here we measured the water flows through the cheese
0:01:04and everything is regulated by these temperature and humidity sensors which are designed to keep
0:01:09the temperature in here about five celsius above and to choose
0:01:13the air is blown and from h back units through these to these ducks
0:01:19the other species were looking at here is the pinion time
0:01:25juniper ending in point are very useful
0:01:28study specimens because juniper is fairly drought tolerant although it does not very low but
0:01:33not as much as pinion pine
0:01:36which is fairly similar to most fines globally
0:01:42this experiment is
0:01:44a one of the current experiment in the sense of its size and its combination
0:01:49factors manipulating
0:01:52what's
0:01:53completely novel about this particular experiment is that we not only have the drought structure
0:01:58but we're also heating the trees
0:02:00it allows us to really assess how things might function in the future
0:02:05it's important for side be aware this i think because
0:02:09myself and lots of others like really care about our force
0:02:13we care about
0:02:14or while glancing this if they're gonna be here for kids we will have to
0:02:19make decisions as a society
0:02:21to know how we're gonna manager in portfolio decisions we make with regards to
0:02:28client
0:02:29then walking enough and fortunate enough to have an amazingly good team great managers
0:02:35excellent staff
0:02:36excellent students postdocs we've been able to build together over the years
0:02:42a program including this wonderful experiment allows us to really start answering these questions without
0:02:47these experiments were not we can't really figure out
0:02:51how trees die
0:02:53so i'm extremely excited about this is really fun
